Job Summary

The Deputy Director of Operations & Maintenance - Farebox Automated Fare Collection (AFC) will manage and direct the administrative, maintenance, and financial activities for all AFC farebox equipment, onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment and related projects, including oversight of farebox maintenance activities and schedules, budgeting, and resources planning in order to achieve predetermined objectives and works independently seeking advice or approval from the Director of Operations & Maintenance, Automated Fare Collection when necessary.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Management and oversight of personnel responsible for all dispatch, maintenance, and repair activities related to AFC farebox and garage/carhouse equipment, and any associated onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and priorities to guide the Director in the fiscal and administrative operations of AFC farebox equipment, onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment, and related projects.
  • Allocates departmental resources, evaluating activities as needed in order to improve effectiveness.
  • Monitors spending and performs variance analyses and devises solutions to correct cost variances.
  • Manage contracts associated with maintenance of AFC farebox equipment and onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment.
  • Coordinate all third-party repairs of AFC farebox parts and onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment.
  • Oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of AFC farebox equipment engineering retrofits, equipment/parts upgrades, and onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment.
  • Coordinate with other departmental resources related to the outsourced cash collection process.
  • Prepare reports and updates for senior management and outside stakeholders on activities, issues, and concerns related to AFC farebox equipment, onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment, and related projects.
  • Serves as the department liaison to other Authority departments on activities related to AFC farebox equipment and onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment to ensure Authority objectives are achieved and policies adhered to.
  • Participate in the development of the operating budget required to support the ongoing operational and maintenance needs of the Authority under an automated fare collection system.
  • Participate in the development, testing and implementation of AFC farebox equipment and onboard revenue vehicle fare collection equipment as needed.
  • Drive a company vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.
  • Respond either directly or through subordinates to emergencies on a twenty-four (24) hour, seven (7) days per week basis.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Business Administration, Project Management, Engineering, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in fare revenue or fare collection.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory, managerial, and/or leadership experience. 
  • Strong management skills including experience with supervising a unionized workforce.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project. 
  • Ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.  
  • Possession of a valid driver's license without infractions in accordance with MBTA policy.
  • Ability to comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc.
  • Successful applicant must have English language skills required for the effective performance of the position.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences

Substitutions Include

  • A High School Diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor's degree requirement. 
  • An associate degree from an accredited institution an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor's degree requirement. 
  • A master's degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience. 
  • A nationally recognized certification, or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.  
Preferred Experience and Skills
  • Experience using proprietary AFC software 
  • Experience working in and around transit areas such as garages, carhouses, or stations.
  • Experience overseeing field staff.
  • Experience using Service Now.

  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and medical Clinic screening, potentially including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
