Software Engineers perform development work across the technology stack (both front-end/back-end expertise). They are versatile in how they can add value, demonstrating the ability to manage the completion of projects that involve databases, back-end services, or the development of front- end applications. They should be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of emerging technologies to support the development of new solutions. Software Engineers understand the full technology stack and underlying applications, services, and databases in order to ensure optimal performance.

The Costco Digital team is looking for an experienced and deeply skilled Software Engineer that will perform development work at an elite level, provide design guidance, and can coach/lead/support engineers at multiple levels. The Software Engineer must have extensive experience on back-end and front-end development and demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. This role will also be directly responsible for delivering capabilities to create delightful user experiences for our members and maintaining them through functional improvement, documentation, profiling, and application performance enhancements. The Software Engineer will design and build modern microservice based APIs to modernize our existing enterprise web applications.

The Software Engineer should be a passionate, driven, self-starting problem-solver who is comfortable with change and excels in a fast-paced environment. They will have deep knowledge and experience working with Ecommerce technologies along with Java concepts and frameworks such as SpringBoot.

ROLE

● Develops the conceptual systems architecture design and the supporting technologies needed to enable new and/or enhanced functionality within a given product/application, applying principles that promote availability, reusability, interoperability, and security into the design framework.

● Supports release planning activities in conjunction with Product Owners and teams.

● Identifies high-level requirements to support the definition and refinement of a robust testing strategy.

● Supports the Product Owner with the identification and definition of enablers/work items to support the architectural runway of a given product/application.

● Defines the non-functional requirements (e.g., performance, security, resiliency, etc.) which support the development of epics and user stories aligned to a value stream.

● Identifies technical dependencies across several product/application teams to support the implementation of new or enhanced functionality.

● Performs development, optimization, and automation activities to support the implementation of a product/application.

● Develops and implements front-end architecture to support user interface concepts.

● Increases proficiency and understanding of relational and non-relational databases, distributed application architectures, user interfaces and user experience, quality assurance, security concerns, and business value creation.

● Drives engineering best practices to deliver higher quality and scalable solutions.

● Provides the team with the development strategy, solution recommendations, and estimates for a given product/application.

● Participates in scrum ceremonies (sprint planning, retrospective, showcases/demos, stand-ups, backlog refinement, etc.).

● Creates and executes unit tests which validate the code changes made to support the implementation of a user story.

● Uses test driven development (TDD) practices to assist with the detection/recognition of software defects early in the development process.

● Estimates, plans, and manages all implementation tasks and reports on development progress.

● Designs, builds, debugs, optimizes, and implements solutions in approved tool sets and databases.

● Develops high-quality, efficient, and fault tolerant software.

● Supports, extends, and builds automated CI and CD pipelines.

● Designs and delivers DevSecOps automation for app deployment and testing.

● Uses APM/monitoring tools such as Dynatrace/Splunk and browser tools to perform request Purepath/Waterfall analysis to identify bottlenecks and suggest improvements.

● Participates in the development and documentation of department standards and best practices, and mentors’ junior Engineers.

● Provides the team with solution recommendations and estimates for a given product/application.

● Identifies deficiencies within a product/application’s code base and identifies opportunities to improve overall code quality.

● Collaborates with team members (e.g., Systems Architects, Systems Analysts) to define project specifications and release documentation for all phases of the product development cycle from product definition to design, through implementation.

● Conducts peer code reviews for the software changes made by other Engineers within a team.

● Defines remediation tactics for large and complex defects impacting several features and/or capabilities within a given product/application.

● Defines product/application specific coding standards and patterns to guide the implementation of new features and capabilities.

● Collaborates with Systems Analysts to decompose solution blueprints and designs into detailed technical requirements.

● Oversees the development of new, highly-responsive, web-based APIs using SpringBoot, Azure Event Hub, and CosmosDB, while adhering to a test driven SDLC process.

● Provides coaching to Engineers at multiple levels.

● Drives code reviews as well as be expected to maintain high-code quality standards.

● Advocates, articulates, and documents engineering best practices.

● Builds trust within engineering organizations as well as can communicate complex ideas at enterprise level.

● Adopts technical ownership of features and advancing product functionality.

● Meets with the Development and Business teams to discuss user interface ideas and applications.

● Advocates for and improves code quality, automated tests, CI/CD initiatives, and the developer experience.

● Reviews application requirements and interface designs.

● Performs troubleshooting for interface software and debugging application code.

● Monitors and improves front-end performance.

● Builds accessible and reusable components.

● Documents application changes and reviews code.

REQUIRED

● Minimum 5 years’ experience in performing API microservices development using C# and/or Java.

● Experience with developing and running applications in a public cloud environment (GCP preferred).

● Hands-on working knowledge of a major relational database (DB2, SQL Server etc.) and/or NoSql.

● Experience working in CI/CD, and designing and delivering DevSecOps automation for app deployment and testing.

● Strong knowledge and experience working with Web Technologies using JavaScript, React.

● Experience describing the solutions and generating the architecture (Logical, Physical) artifacts.

● Ability to work with all levels of the development organization, including non-technical resources.

● Possesses high- integrity, accountability, a positive attitude, and be willing to do what it takes to make the team successful.

● Knowledgeable in application development in Java, JavaScript, .Net, Ember, and C#.

● Experience in programming in major databases such as Microsoft SQL Server.

● Possesses a strong understanding of the software development process.

● Strong knowledge of object-oriented concepts.

● Strong knowledge and experience working with databases.

● Strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate to both technical and Business audiences.

● Demonstrated ability to execute against iteration plans and deliver assignments within scope, schedule, and budget.

● Ability to work with all management levels.

● Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to multitask and prioritize work effectively in a fast-paced working environment.

● Detail-oriented and possesses strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze potential future issues.

● Able to support off-hours work as required, including weekends, holidays, and 24/7 on call responsibilities on a rotational basis.

Recommended

● 2+ years’ experience in React.js, HTML, CSS3.

● Degree or equivalent education (Computer Science or related field).

● Experience working in a retail Ecommerce environment.

● Experience working on design systems building highly composable, reusable components.

● Driven performance analysis, and understanding of large-scale application infrastructure and dependencies.

● Familiarity with design patterns and microservices-based architecture patterns.

● Experience with writing complex Graphql, Redis, CosmoDB, or similar NoSQL databases.

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

● Proficient in Google Workspace applications, including Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Gmail.

Pay Ranges:

Level 2 - $105,000 - $135000

Level 3 - $130,000 - $160,000

Level Sr - $150,000 - $190,000, Bonus and Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) eligible
