Responsibilities*

This is an hourly position for current and incoming UM-Dearborn STUDENTS (work-study preferred). Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

As a part of the University Unions & Events (UUE) team, the Student Operations Team serves as building leaders by offering excellent front-line customer service and behind-the-scenes support to many campus events. By providing accurate and attractive room set-ups, tear-downs and functioning A/V equipment in UUE and campus facilities, this team ensures successful events and meetings on campus. The UUE Student Operations Team helps to ensure positive experiences and a sense of community throughout the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Ops Team members are also responsible for providing many other services throughout the buildings, some of which are listed below.

We are looking for student leaders who are interested in developing a student and guest-focused community at UM-Dearborn. The University Unions & Events team presents a unique opportunity for students to serve in a student management capacity in the buildings and on campus, and we are seeking applications from students who can contribute successfully and positively to our community.

Responsibilities

  • Open/close meeting rooms & event spaces in the Renick University Center, Fairlane Center, and other academic buildings on the UM-Dearborn campus.
  • Perform room set-ups and take-downs for events and programs, including tables, chairs, linens, and other furnishings (repeated heavy lifting required).
  • Help monitor Renick University Center cooperatively with the Student Building Manager (student supervisors). 
  • Set-up and troubleshoot audio-visual equipment (projectors, laptops, sound systems, microphones, speakers, etc).  Specific training will be provided.
  • Represent the University of Michigan-Dearborn professionally and courteously, providing a positive experience throughout the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to guest requests, complaints, inquiries, and needs arising in campus facilities and during events.
  • Attend scheduled staff or other assigned meetings.
  • Maintain pertinent notes on event sets, AV, and building situations to relay to building managers and/professional staff 
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Ensure guest, customer, staff, and building safety, security, and cleanliness. Assist with building evacuations, as needed.
  • Act in accordance with and enforce all University and department policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor and the UUE Building Managers.

Required Qualifications*

  • Current degree-seeking student enrolled at UM-Dearborn, enrolled at least part-time (or starting degree in Fall 2026)
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and must maintain GPA during employment.
  • Lack of judicial or honors offenses.
  • Able to communicate efficiently and succinctly through a variety of platforms and stay on top of communications received from supervisors and professional staff 
  • Familiar with the Google suite of programs, including Gmail, Forms, Docs, Sheets, Chat, and others as needed
  • Possess good organizational skills, initiative, attention to detail, and a positive attitude.
  • Desire to assist others and provide excellent customer service as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Able to demonstrate professional etiquette in all interactions.
  • Able to make sound decisions and work independently at times.
  • Able to lift/move 50 lbs. or more repeatedly.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule. Available shifts vary: days, nights, weekends.
  • Able to work for an entire semester; prefer commitment of at least two semesters.
  • Must be available to work 10-15 hours per week for at least one full semester; preference for candidates who can work at least two consecutive semesters.
  • Hiring now for fall semester, so students need to be enrolled or a new student for Fall 2026.
  • Must be available to attend training and begin work week of August 17, 2026.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Due to the nature of the work, this position is 100% onsite.

Additional Information

Must be able to work at least 10-15 hours a week, with a consistent schedule during the academic year.

Position requires repeated physical movement of self, furniture, and equipment in a fast-paced environment.

We are hiring multiple students for this position, depending on students' availability and scheduling.

Some potential for a July 1 start date, but most hires will start the week of August 17, 2026. Please note your preference in your cover letter.
