Position Type:

Assistant Professor in Public Health (Tenure Track) in Infectious Disease

Position Type:

Regular

Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $102,060 to $113,443, depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college-level. The position comes with generous benefits (scu.edu/hr/benefits), including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, and university contributions toward retirement. There are two housing assistance programs: Rental assistance to ease the transition into the local housing market, and housing purchase assistance for tenure-stream faculty.

Purpose:

The Department of Public Health at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Public Health focused on Infectious Disease. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to both teaching and research, be able to establish an active research program involving undergraduate students, and engage in service to the Department, College, and University. We seek a teacher/scholar who will conduct research at the intersection of health and inequality, with a focus on Infectious Disease. Substantive areas of interest could include a range of topics within infectious disease, including global health issues, environmental health inequities, climate change and public health, vaccination, pandemic preparedness, or other related areas. We encourage applications from Public Health fields including, but not limited to Epidemiology, Environmental Health, Global Health, and more.

We are an interdisciplinary department of teacher-scholars driven by a commitment to health equity as the foundation of public health. The Public Health major offers two academic areas of emphasis: Health Science and Health & Society. All students are required to complete a core set of Public Health courses, with more Natural Science courses required for Health Science students as a strong basis for graduate degrees in the health professions (medical school, nursing/NP, PA, dentistry, and more). Our curriculum is based on a social determinants of health framework, understanding the nexus of structural, social, biological, environmental and behavioral determinants of health. Areas of teaching need include a lower-division introductory course, such as Microbes and Humanity; upper division courses on Infections and Inequalities, Global Health, and/or the Environment and Health; contributions to Departmental core courses (e.g. Introduction to Public Health, Evidence Based Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics and/or Senior Capstone); and an elective or required course related to the candidate's specialty area.

Located in the heart of northern Californias Silicon Valley, SCU is a private, Catholic, Jesuit liberal arts university committed to promoting social justice in a comprehensive educational setting. It is an AA/EOE employer. Faculty are teacher-scholars who balance a commitment to quality teaching with active programs of research. We assess candidates based on scholarly and teaching potential; contribution to University, College, and Department priorities; potential to meet the criteria for promotion and tenure; and evaluation of diversity, equity and inclusion competencies. This position is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service. A full-time teaching load is six courses per year on a quarter system (typically 2/2/2), assuming faculty are engaged in an active scholarship program. Housing assistance is available

Department of Public Health faculty members often collaborate with colleagues in other SCU departments, including Anthropology, Biology, Communication, Environmental Sciences and Studies, Ethnic Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Womens and Gender Studies. The Department values community-engaged research, is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, and strongly encourages applications from members of historically excluded groups, including people of color, women, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities. Over the last decade, Santa Clara University has recruited an increasingly diverse faculty, enrolled more diverse and low-income students, and it recently committed to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution.
