What's the role?

  • Understanding, management and implementation of Requirements for the Quality Assurance of Maritime Vessels in support of Group requirements for shipping businesses for Americas Regional trading Towing Vessels, Barges, dry bulk carriers and project vessels proposed for use by Shell and will be conversant with national and international legislation (i.e. MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM) and Industry Standards, codes and Guidelines (i.e. ISGOTT, ICS, IBC).
  • The application of established Shell assurance criteria for vessels nominated for Shell Group Business, prior to making a screening decision.
  • Support the provision of vetting services on a continuous basis by engaging in collaborative activities as required, including out of office hours roster as required.
  • Daily maintenance of the Group Maritime Assurance System (GMAS) database of vessels. Regional Maritime Assurance Assessors are responsible for maintaining professional relations with all internal customers as well as external customers (Vessel owners, Oil Companies, Vessel Technical Managers, Industry Organizations - AMO, OCIMF).
  • The management of incidents reported to STUSCO, including pro-active follow up with the technical operator responsible for the day to day management of the vessel involved.
  • Support time charter assurance in the assurance of long term time chartered vessels.
  • Recommend improvements to the Maritime Assurance procedure to enhance the screening process.
  • Conduct Management Reviews of third party technical operators to determine acceptability for level of business.
  • This role has a significant impact on Shell's reputation in the maritime industry due to the high level of engagement with external stakeholders.
  • The nature of the Trading business requires a dynamic team responsive to the chartering needs of the businesses.

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis
  • Recognized Barge (Person-in-Charge) endorsement, Towing Vessel Master license, or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum 3 years of related work experience.
  • Proven experience on inland Tugs and Barges is an advantage for the role.
  • Proven experience on Ocean going Tugs and Barges is also a positive advantage.
  • Existing Category 3 SIRE inspector accreditation is preferred.
  • Previous experience ashore in an operational role is preferred, but not essential.
  • The knowledge and ability to apply international and national legislation (ie; MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM) and Industry standards, codes and guidelines (ie; ISGOTT, ICS, IBC) as well as US Code of Federal Regulations is key to this position.
  • An ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels within the organization and with internal and external contacts is essential as is the ability to approach problem solving in an innovative manner.
  • It is essential for the incumbent to be fluent in English and able to report effectively verbally and in writing.
  • A candidate that is multilingual (Spanish preferred) is desirable but not essential.
  • Self-Motivated, experienced professional with ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (including teamwork) are essential for success in this position.

The base salary range for this position is $101,000 - $151,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave to birthing mothers, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents. Additionally, employees are eligible for disability leave for up to 52 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
