Summary

This position is located in the Pharmacy Department of the Lower Brule Service Unit, in Lower Brule, SD, located in the Great Plains Area IHS. The purpose of the position is to provide regular and recurring pharmacist duties as well as function as the Chief Pharmacist for the service unit.

Duties

  • Provides technical and administrative supervision to all pharmacy staff members within the Pharmacy Department, both outpatient and inpatient.
  • Assigns work to subordinates; evaluates work performance; advise or counsel employees on work and administrative matters; interview candidates for positions; evaluates work performances, approves leave.
  • Provides direct pharmaceutical services by selecting, procuring, preparing and dispensing medications. Reads and interprets prescriptions; measures and mixes compound drugs and chemicals. Resolves Issues related to clinical, chemical and therapeutic applications of drugs. Reviews and records all patient information regarding therapeutic appropriateness of drug therapy. Provides consultative services and instruction to patients on safe usage of prescribed medications.
  • Maintains the records control system, handles the purchasing and requisitioning of supplies and equipment, prepares and maintains the department budget, assures the department and staff are in compliance with all Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO} standards, guidelines and all other regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure: Applicants must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience: Applicant's qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position. Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties. Qualifying professional pharmacy experience may involve, but is not limited to:
  • Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects;
  • Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations;
  • Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility's pharmacy program;
  • Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens;
  • Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications;
  • Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries; and/or
  • Maintaining all medication records required by law.

In addition to the Basic Requirements (licensure, medical and education described above), you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Specialized Experience for the GS-13: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Demonstrated professional experience in directing a hospital or clinic pharmacy program which includes experience in supervising staff, directing all activities in pharmacy, developing and implementing pharmacy policies and procedures, experience in working with accreditation standards and performance improvement activities.

Supervisory Abilities: This is a supervisory position and candidates, in addition to the professional qualifications listed, must have demonstrated in their work experience or training, that they possess, or have potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision, as required for this position.
