Job Summary

The Department of Pathology is seeking a Healthcare Administrative Manager Intermediate. The chosen individual will manage the operational and personnel activities of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory. Involvement in laboratory technical, regulatory, and compliance matters will also be expected.

Responsibilities*

  • Plan, assign, and evaluate the work of clinical laboratory staff. 
  • Responsible for oversight along with implementation of education and training programs for laboratory staff. 
  • Review, endorse, and modify the recommended employment, promotions, and salary increases of laboratory staff. 
  • Responsible for the resolution of employee complaints and grievances.
  •  Ensure compliance with equal opportunity employment and employee safety programs. 
  • Participate in the design and implementation of the quality assurance and continuous improvement programs for the clinical laboratory. 
  • Participate in ensuring laboratory compliance with all regulatory and licensing standards. 
  • Collaborate with team to continuously improve laboratory operations through workflow assessment, redesign, and reengineering.
  • Prioritize laboratory projects based on impact and resource availability (e.g. fiscal, process improvement, and patient safety)
  • Coordinate information technology functions as related to lab test ordering, resulting, and test builds.
  • Collaborate with laboratory medical and operations directors in the selection and evaluation of new analyzers, equipment, and supplies, and oversee the validation/verification of new tests and equipment
  • Responsible for development of policies and procedures in coordination with technical staff and medical leadership. 
  • Work with laboratory medical and operations to prepare budget, testing projection, and staffing reports. 
  • Represent the laboratory at departmental, hospital, and regional meetings as deemed appropriate by the Clinical Pathology Operations Director and medical leadership. 

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Baccalaureate degree in Medical Laboratory Science, equivalent laboratory science, or in a chemical, physical or biological science. 
  • Combination of education, experience, and certification that meets all accreditation requirements according to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA).
  • Qualifications to fill CLIA role of General Supervisor.
  • Extensive laboratory supervisory and management experience. 
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory regulatory and compliance requirements. 
  • Experience with implementing and monitoring quality assurance plans.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory information systems. 
  • Minimum of 10 years supervisory/management experience in a clinical laboratory discipline to be eligible for the Administrative Manager Intermediate, a minimum of 5 years is required to be eligible for the Administrative Manager Associate.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Certification by an accrediting agency such as the Board of Certification (BOC). 
  • Evidence of excellent communication, process improvement, change management, and team building skills. 
  • Critical thinking skills and project management experience.
  • Ability to function independently with demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc. 
  • Evidence of Lean/Six Sigma education or certification.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
