Summary:
The UNC School of Medicine Dean’s Office Administrative Fellowship is a one-year leadership development program that provides broad exposure to the administration of a leading academic medical institution. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Administration, the fellow will work closely with executive leaders on strategic initiatives spanning education, research, clinical programs, finance, human resources, facilities, and organizational operations. As the inaugural fellow, the individual will help shape the fellowship experience while leading impactful projects aligned with School priorities. The fellow will also participate in executive onboarding, leadership development programming, and shared learning opportunities with fellows across UNC Health.
Essential Responsibilities
Learning Objectives
Through the fellowship, participants will:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the administrative functions that support a leading academic medical institution.
- Gain exposure to the interconnected missions of medical education, biomedical research, clinical care, and service.
- Build leadership, project management, communication, and change management skills.
- Establish relationships with senior leaders, faculty, administrators, and fellow learners across UNC Health and the School of Medicine.
- Explore career pathways in academic medicine administration and healthcare leadership.
Reporting Relationship
The Administrative Fellow reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Administration and will receive guidance from executive sponsors, mentors, and leaders throughout the School of Medicine.
Program Length
- One-year fellowship
- Located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

- Three recommendation letters – at least one academic and one professional. These letters should address the applicant’s administrative and/or management experience as well as academic qualifications. The letters can be addressed to the Fellowship Selection Committee.
- Personal statement – introduce yourself in a one-page personal statement regarding what you hope to achieve from a fellowship at one of our sites and what draws you to that particular site. Note: You need to fill out multiple applications if you choose to apply to more than one UNC Health fellowship. Additionally, you are required to send a separate personal statement to each program.
- Your essay answering ONE of the following prompts in no more than 300 words:
This fellowship offers a distinctive opportunity to help launch and shape a new leadership program while contributing meaningful work that supports the future of the UNC School of Medicine.

● Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline and actively pursuing a Master’s degree in a healthcare-related field with successful completion of Master's degree coursework.
