The Communication, Journalism & Media Department at Suffolk University invites applications for a full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning July 1, 2025. We are particularly interested in candidates who take a critical approach to the study of media and journalism, with a focus on the current status, character, and social and political influence of news/journalism in a rapidly changing media environment. Our journalism and media programs emphasize social justice and nonfiction storytelling. Teacher scholars whose active research interests and/or professional experience is with Black, Latino, Indigenous, and/or MENA (Middle Eastern or North African) communities in the US or abroad are especially encouraged to apply.

Candidates should provide evidence of commitment to excellent teaching and scholarly potential, including a research agenda and plans for peer-reviewed publication. The department includes undergraduate majors in Journalism, Media & Film, and Global Cultural Communication. The successful candidate will be able to teach introductory and core classes that contribute to all three majors such as Introduction to Communication, Journalism I, Introduction to Media, and Research Methods, as well as upper-level classes that may include Issues in Journalism, Social Issues in Documentary Film, Digital Storytelling and courses appropriate for Global Cultural Communication majors. Ability to develop and teach new courses in one or more of the following areas is expected: multi-platform journalism; news media and social conflict; social media and journalism; Generative AI and media; news media and activism; and news media coverage of, and influence on, marginalized, indigenous, and/or migrant communities. The successful candidate will also contribute to the Core Curriculum by developing courses for our First Year Seminar program or disciplinary courses for non-major students. In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching and research, the successful candidate is expected to advise and mentor undergraduate students, and engage in service within the Department, College, and University. The workload for this position is 45% teaching, 35% research, and 20% service with a 5-course teaching load per year.

Faculty in the Communication, Journalism & Media Department have a wide range of expertise. They hold leadership positions on national advisory boards, conduct research on cutting-edge issues, publish in competitive disciplinary journals, contribute to high profile research centers, corporate boards, and civic and non-profit organizations, and moderate and facilitate issues-based dialogs, debates and discussions through print, broadcast and film/media non-fiction storytelling. We have a shared commitment to advancing social justice. Our faculty are engaged in the community as practitioners, subject experts, researchers, advocates and consultants. Department faculty take advantage of our location in the heart of Boston to participate in broad research, writing, creative activities and other professional opportunities as teacher-scholars.

The successful candidate will contribute to a rich tradition of community-engaged teaching and experiential education that prepares our diverse, substantially first-generation college students-40% of whom are Pell eligible-for careers and civic engagement. The successful candidate will have a commitment to inclusive pedagogy and curricular diversity, mentoring and advising students-especially first-generation college students-as well as conducting impactful research. We seek candidates excited about centering best practices pedagogy focused on active, applied and experiential learning in their teaching; a commitment to ongoing and continuous improvement in teaching is expected. Familiarity with and experience using pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and ability groups to reach their maximum potential is a valuable qualification.

Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant field (Communication, Journalism or a related field) by the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year; ABD candidates in the final stages of completing their degrees will be considered. Experience teaching preferred.
