Full Job Description

The Assistant TV Studio Manager works collaboratively with the CAS Director of Broadcast Facilities to oversee and implement the day-to-day operations of Suffolk University's Studio 73. Together, they are responsible for the scheduling, logistics, public relations, engineering, and overall supervision of the many studio projects. These include assisting classes, broadcasting LIVE events, collaborating with our Suffolk community and professional partnerships, teaching hands-on learning workshops, and overseeing student productions.

Primary/Principal Responsibilities:

Ensure equipment in Studio 73 is operational:

  • Equipment includes but is not limited to video switcher, video cameras, editing/recording platforms, audio mixer, teleprompters, lights, communication systems, and TV monitors
  • Develop a Maintenance schedule: when needed, and if applicable - repair broken items, test gear, upgrade software, report items that need to be sent out for repair to Director of Broadcast Facilities and/or CAS Equipment manager
  • Maintain an annual inventory of Studio 73 equipment condition and share with CAS for future equipment replacement planning and reference
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with supervisor and direct reports to ensure smooth operation of CAS production gear and facilities.

Train and supervise work-study students:

  • Helps train approx. 12 - 16 work-study students per academic year to support Studio 73 operations.
  • Maintains work-study schedule to ensure proper staffing for various events, including classes, professional partnerships, student productions and special events (such as outreach programs, LIVE web streams, and a variety of University-wide, LIVE and taped, independent shoots and open houses).
  • Serves as primary on-site supervisor for work study students

Support CAS departments, the Suffolk community and professional partners:

  • Ensure studio is ready for each program and/or class meeting.
  • Support faculty effectively in their respective class needs. (It is expected that faculty inform or collaborate with the Studio 73 staff ahead of time as to their needs for any given class period to provide staff adequate time to prepare.)
  • Work with students for in-class productions. Support includes tasks such as assisting students to upload their finished videos and making scripts available in teleprompters. (It is expected that students adhere to the respective class schedule and expectations that the staff support.)
  • Research the latest in video, audio, and computer technology as relating to Studio 73.
  • Maintain knowledge about Equipment Lab vending operations and delivery of video equipment for classes on the 4th floor of 20 SMT. The Assistant TV Studio Manager may cover and/or supervise the CAS Equipment Lab, under an absence or emergency circumstance.
  • Communicate with outside partners, such as BNN, (Boston Neighborhood Network) to distribute student productions for broadcast.
  • Collaborate and run our broadcast partner productions with Suffolk faculty (in the role of interviewee expert) to support professional programming and faculty scholarship and service.

Manages the Studio 73 media outreach:

  • Serves as liaison with Studio 73's professional partners (existing and prospective) to ensure smooth collaborations.
  • Posts and maintains all CJN Studio 73 social media (such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), including assigning work study students as photographers and editors.
  • Serve as liaison with Suffolk's Office of Communication and CAS on collaborations for Studio 73 outreach.

Other duties as assigned by Director of Broadcast Facilities or Dean to ensure smooth operation between our Studio facilities and the College of Arts and Sciences including contributing to summer programs for high school and college students focused on Film/TV/Media.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Professional experience required: 2+ years working in a TV STUDIO/LIVE TAPING environment, including knowledge of signal flow, TV engineering, and integration.
  • Administrative skills: MS Office, work with both PC and Mac.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and problem solve, be detail-oriented, and be a team player.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to climb ladders and be able to lift 35-40 pounds.
  • Hours of Work: 35 hours/week; hours may vary by semester - usually M-F and some weekends.
