Job Summary

The Automotive Service Technician will be responsible for performing all tasks related to the maintenance and repair of MBTA revenue and non-revenue vehicles.  This includes but is not limited to full transmission rebuilds, engine rebuilds, high-voltage repair work, all communications systems on board vehicles, inspections, repairs, and any maintenance necessary to return vehicles to service.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ability to meet or exceed any established standard repair times for all work within the classification.
  • Perform testing, inspections, and related repairs of all vehicle components and systems for revenue and non-vehicles, as required by MBTA's preventative maintenance program.
  • Maintain, inspect, test diagnose, fuel, service, alter, rebuild and repair the electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and air-conditioning equipment of buses, trucks and other automotive vehicles.
  • Inspect, test, alter, and repair diesel and gasoline engines, clutches, transmissions, axles, generators, compressors, air-conditioning systems, brake assemblies, and electrical and mechanical accessories.
  • Align wheels and steering equipment; reline and brakes and clutches; use and operate various types of equipment including hand tools, power tools, and complex testing instruments.
  • Use a variety of measuring and portable test equipment to maintain vehicle operating parameters and to troubleshoot system defects.
  • Interpret technical publications, blueprints, and wiring diagrams. Produce written equipment reports and records.
  • Remain current with the MBTA's Safety Plan as well as the position's outline responsibilities.
  • Ensure that all inventory levels, equipment, and facilities and protected in a safe operating condition.
  • Input daily work into computerized system; display proficiency in maintenance software applications necessary for performing and recording work on preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Drive a company vehicle or personal vehicle, including buses, to visit work sites and/or transport crews or equipment as needed.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
  • Respond or report to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Adhere to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the Authority including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination, Anti-Harassment and Anti- Retaliation policies.
  • Perform related duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution with the ability to comprehend, communicate and respond to instructions, orders, signs notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
  • Candidate must have one (1) year experience in automotive maintenance.
  • Candidate must successfully pass the MBTA's Technician exam. 
  • Candidate must successfully pass required MBTA Training. 
  • A valid driver's license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and required endorsements.
  • Effective multi-taking and time management skills.
  • Candidates must display the ability to meet all established standard repair times (SRT) in previous positions.
  • Have the ability to use automotive maintenance software applications.
  • Possess a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the MBTA's Driving Record Policy.
  • The ability to pass: a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check; background screenings; and the MBTA's medical requirements, including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screening.
  • Employees must meet the qualification standards that are job related and consistent with necessity and must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
  • Have a satisfactory work record including overall employment, job performance, discipline and safety records. (For internal candidates, the aforementioned applies to the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of the posting.   • The ability to work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed. Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week. The ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.

Substitutions Include

  • Two (2) year technical or vocational training program, including but not limited to a college degree program, high school vocational program, union apprenticeship, United States Armed Services training and/or documented employer training may be substituted for the required work experience.
Preferences:
  • Experience with heavy or transit vehicle maintenance.

  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
