Counselor, Counseling and Accessibility Services

Description
The Counselor, Counseling & Accessibility Services, provides advocacy, policy implementation, and counseling services for the students of Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute. This includes disability verification, providing appropriate services, such as physical and academic accommodations, academic advisement, personal counseling, and career counseling. Additionally, this staff member will assist currently enrolled students, and the community at large with making informed career and educational choices and/or fulfilling requirements for admission to CCC&TI. This staff member may administer and interpret personality, interest, work values, and experience/ability assessments; conduct classes and workshops related to disability and counseling topics; interpret placement tests as well as provide brief personal counseling and crisis intervention, and other duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties
 Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Provide specialized academic, career, personal and accessibility counseling to students and maintain current and up-to-date anecdotal records. 
Advocate for students to promote inclusion and diversity. 
Evaluate documentation; arrangement for necessary and appropriate accommodations for students with accessibility needs, including those students dually enrolled.
Meet each semester with every student requesting accommodations to develop/revise Academic Accommodation Plans and evaluate student status with accessibility services. 
Maintain a working relationship with the public schools in the service areas of Caldwell and Watauga counties, Vocational Rehabilitation, and other agencies to coordinate services for eligible students.  
Secure and maintain appropriate assistive technology for students with accessibility needs.
Keep informed regarding current counseling & disability case law and issues. 
Provide individual and group career assessment (on and off-campus as needed or requested), career guidance and counseling services; administer and interpret the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Harrington-O’Shea Career Decision Making System (CDM), the Type Focus and/or CFNC computerized career guidance system, and other published and online career assessments and exploration resources.
Assist the director, faculty, and staff with monitoring and assuring ADA compliance in the development and delivery of all course content and student support services, whether that material or service is delivered face-to-face or via an online or other distance methods. 
Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students, faculty and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for difference and dignity of others.
Conduct informational and educational workshops for faculty, staff, and students on topics including, but not limited to, accommodation considerations (ADA protocol), career exploration, career decision making, mental health and wellness, assessing labor market information, study skills, life management skills, stress management, etc.
Be proficient in the admissions process and placement test interpretation; acquire and regularly update knowledge base about all CCC & TI academic program requirements, developmental coursework requirements and course progression; be familiar with college transfer requirements and degree options.
Provide one-to-one personal counseling services in crisis situations and refer students to outside providers for continuing or intensive services as needed.
Participate in professional associations and upgrade professional knowledge and skills when needed; attend professional conferences and approved training as required for professional credentials.
Perform other duties (i.e. registration, graduation, job fairs, recruitment activities, college committees and task forces, etc.).

Marginal Functions:
Perform or assist with other duties as assigned.
Assess and evaluate services and student outcomes.
Supports the mission and vision of the college. 
Ability to identify and build positive relationships with all colleagues and other outside entities.
Represent the Student Services department at campus committee meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
This position description covers the most essential functions and duties associated with this position. The President or appropriate supervisory personnel may assign additional duties. Qualifications and Working Conditions

Principles and techniques of classroom instruction.

Principles and techniques of counseling and/or other mental health discipline.

Characteristics of underprivileged populations and developmental students.

The mission, goals and objectives of CCC & TI.

Principles and procedures of record keeping.

Safe work practices and procedures.

Operational characteristics of equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.

Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment.

Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regula­tions.

Ability to:

Interpret and apply college and assigned division goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

Contribute to the development of the objectives of the institution which compliment those of the college.

Prepare clear and concise administrative and financial reports.

Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Interpret, explain, and enforce departmental polices and procedures.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Follow all safety rules and regulations of the department.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions

Environmental Conditions:

The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office workspace, working closely with others, and periodically working irregular hours.

The employee must maintain the office environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment. 

Physical Conditions:

The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.

Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.

Scheduling Conditions:

This is a full-time, 12-month position, which requires the employee to be on campus or at an approved alternate location for at least thirty-six hours per week, Monday through Thursday, 8:00am-5:00pm, and Friday, 8:00am-12:00pm, including one evening per week till 7:00 PM. This position generally works daytime hours, but has the potential for occasional evening or weekend hours.

Traveling Conditions:

Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed. Out of state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences. 

Experience and Training
Required Training and Experience:

Master's Degree in counseling or social work. Alternatively, a Master’s Degree in a related field with two years’ professional experience in counseling or social work, will be considered.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Knowledge and experience in tests and measurements and in psychosocial interviewing and counseling techniques. Computer/MS Office skills.

Preferred Training and Experience:

Master's Degree in counseling or social work and two years’ professional experience in the field of study. Eligibility for credentialing as an NCC, NCLCMHC or LCSW is highly desired.
