The Position:
The Dean of the College of Science and Engineering reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a member of the Council of Deans. The Dean provides leadership and executive management of the College. The Dean supervises Associate Deans, Department Chairs for each academic unit within the College, and staff in the Oce of the Dean who help execute the mission of the unit.

The Dean will lead the development of a plan for CoSE that, in alignment with the Universitys strategic plan, energizes the facultys commitment to excellent teaching and impactful research, and improves the alignment of the Colleges programsand its graduateswith the needs of the regional economy and its major employers.

Responsibilities:

• Leading staff, faculty, and students in setting strategic, operational, and nancial directions for the Colleges growth and enhancement.
• Developing, implementing, evaluating, and promoting high quality academic programs, curriculum, and excellence in teaching that support students and achieve the mission and values of the College and University.
• Supporting a robust research prole throughout the College.
• Honoring and fostering shared governance and embracing the concept of servant leadership, collaboration, open communication, and transparency with faculty, staff, and students.
• Promoting and enhancing the student educational experience by focusing on student success, retention, research opportunities, and graduation rates.
• Supporting and developing faculty to excel in teaching and scholarship, promoting growth in research and creative activity, and maintaining accreditation and professional standards.
• Developing positive working relationships with faculty and staff; fostering an organizational culture in alignment with ISUs shared values of integrity, community, inclusivity, teamwork, shared responsibility, and learning.
• Collaborate with key stakeholders, including such relevant organizations as the Idaho National Laboratory, Department of Energy, Idaho Transportation Department, Micron Technology, and others, to develop partnerships and to ensure the College is producing graduates who meet the needs of organizations locally, regionally, and nationally.
• Develop synergistic relationships of mutual benet with key educational institutions in the region, particularly the University of Idaho, Boise State University, BYU Idaho, the College of Southern Idaho, and the College of Eastern Idaho.
• Diversifying resource streams that are in alignment with the goals of the College.
• Building external relationships and fundraising with alumni and potential donors to support research growth and the Colleges mission and activities.
• Ensuring nancial stability including strategic budget oversight, securing philanthropic donations, fostering partnerships, and facilitating external funding opportunities.
• Serving as a member of the ISU Deans Council and Leadership Council; working with the President, Provost, Vice Presidents, and fellow Deans and department heads to promote interdisciplinary programs, projects, and initiatives.
• Providing leadership for assessment and ensuring the College meets and exceeds relevant standards for accreditation.

Qualifications:
Minimum:

• An earned terminal degree in an area related to one of the College's disciplines, and a record of recognized scholarly research and teaching accomplishments sucient to merit appointment as a full professor.
• At least ve (5) years of progressively responsible experience working collaboratively in academic leadership in a culture of shared governance, including at least three (3) years of experience directly supervising faculty and/or staff by performing oversight, mentorship, and evaluation duties.
• Demonstrated commitment to growing enrollment through effective work to support student recruitment, retention, and achievement.
• Success working with and supporting faculty, staff, and students from diverse disciplines and methods/modes of inquiry.
• Demonstrated success in developing and fostering research growth and collaboration with external partners from the public and private sector.
• Experience with budget planning and management.

Preferred:

• Successful experience in strategic planning that fosters collaborative work with faculty and academic leaders to identify the priorities of the College and develop strategies and tactics for achieving them.
• Track record of implementing plans, demonstrating outstanding delegation and supervision skills, creative problem-solving skills, and a collaborative management style.
• A commitment to use of leading-edge methods and instructional technologies to support teaching and learning at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Experience in supporting and growing interdisciplinary programs.
• A record demonstrating creative thinking, the ability to make informed decisions, and to communicate effectively the rationale for decisions.
• Superior communication skills and the ability to articulate a compelling message about the value and impact of the Colleges programs to diverse audiences.
• Experience with accreditation agencies and processes related to the disciplines of the College.
• Experience with and a commitment to securing external support through grant-seeking and fund-raising efforts.
• Support for faculty entrepreneurialism in scholarly research, teaching, and service.
• A commitment to professional, community-based, applied, and traditional education and scholarship.
• Experience utilizing a university leadership role to work effectively in civic leadership roles with professionals in industry, education, community, and governmental organizations.

About the College of Science and Engineering:
The academic programs of the College of Science and Engineering provide unique opportunities for synergy in collaboration between science and engineering. Committed to excellence in teaching and research, the College seeks a Dean who can lead in the development of a strategic vision for the College that energizes its faculty and staff while aligning with and advancing the strategic plan of the University.

The departments of the College of Science and Engineering (CoSE) include biological sciences; chemistry; computer science; geosciences; mathematics and statistics; physics; civil and environmental engineering; electrical and computer engineering; mechanical and measurement and control engineering; and nuclear engineering. The individual strengths of these departments and degrees combine to create a college that leads in innovation, growth, and student success.

Each department offers a range of degrees pertinent to its discipline and role within the College, including the undergraduate Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees as well as the graduate Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctorate (D.A., Ph.D.) degrees. The programs of the College also contribute to the preparation of students who need strong STEM fundamentals particularly in the health sciences but who are not CoSE program majors. Excellence in teaching, a focus on student retention and success, and student engagement in research are hallmarks of the College.

CoSE is proud of its commitment to research. Through strong associations with research partners, in both government and private sectors, and facilities that support multidisciplinary research, external funding for research by CoSE scholars has grown from $5.3 million to over $12 million in the past six years. This represents nearly one-third of ISUs annual external sponsorship portfolio.

The College actively fosters collaboration between science and engineering. The University has unique opportunities for the development of biomedical research capabilities in cooperation with ISUs health sciences programs and for the development of engineering and science programs in Idaho Falls that are synergistic with the mission of the federal Idaho National Laboratory. The Colleges commitment to meeting the educational and research needs of the region and the world is supported by the work of the CoSE Advisory Board, whose members include corporate and government agency leaders.

Centers, Institutes, and several core research facilities support research and academic programs on the main Pocatello campus. These include STEM-related facilities such as the Center for Ecology Research and Education (CERE), the Idaho Accelerator Center, the Molecular Research Core Facility, the GIS Training and Research Center, the ISU Animal Care Facility, a number of college-supported labs for water, structure and cybersecurity, to name a few. Accreditation
The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) is ISUs institutional accreditor. The NWCCU is an independent, non-prot membership organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the regional authority on educational quality and institutional effectiveness of higher education institutions in the seven-state Northwest region of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. It fullls its mission by establishing accreditation criteria and evaluation procedures by which institutions are reviewed. Many undergraduate and graduate programs maintain specialized professional accreditation. The Oce of Institutional Research maintains the most up-to-date list of over 80 ISU programs with specialized accreditation.

University Leadership
Dr. Robert W. Wagner began serving as Idaho State Universitys fourteenth president on January 29, 2024. Before coming to ISU, he was the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Ocer at Utah State University (USU). He also previously served as the Vice President for Academic and Instructional Services, a unique organizational blend of student, faculty, operational, innovation and academic programming responsibilities.

While at Utah State University Dr. Wagner held several administrative positions including leadership within USUs Provost Oce (Assistant Vice Provost, Vice Provost, Executive Vice Provost and Dean) associated with the universitys Statewide Campus System, academic programming and faculty development, as well as Executive Director for Distance Education.

Before coming to USU in 2007, Wagner served as a Special Assistant to the President, focused on government relations and special projects for the State University of New York at Albany. His administrative experience includes institutional strategic planning, cross-institutional collaboration, community engagement, innovation in higher education, fundraising, student achievement, and government, industry and community partnerships.

With a visionary strategic plan in place, the University is well positioned for innovation and growth. Dr. Wagner has launched conversations through the Bold Path Forward initiative that give faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders an opportunity to actively shape the trajectory of Idaho State University.
