Full Job Description

The primary responsibility of the Detective/Crime Prevention Officer is to prevent members of the University community from becoming victims of crime by educating students, faculty and staff on crime prevention techniques through information sessions, written materials and group meetings. The Crime Prevention Officer is also responsible for planning and attending community engagement events with internal and external partners. The Crime Prevention Officer is directly responsible for the execution of a crime prevention programs as set forth by the Chief according to the University's crime prevention program. The Crime Prevention Officer is a Patrol Officer who is appointed the Crime Prevention Position by the chief. When not assigned to specific crime prevention duties or projects, the Crime Prevention Officer assumes the regular duties of a patrol officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement programs and communications to prevent members of the University Community from becoming victims of crime by educating students, faculty and staff on crime prevention techniques. Examples of programs/communications include, but are not limited to, monthly crime prevention/ educational flyer distributed throughout campus, monthly advertisement in the Journal, seasonal crime prevention programs, (i.e. T safety in September, alcohol awareness in October, etc, holiday safety at residence hall move out).
  • Respond to significant calls for assistance from the community as directed.
  • Identify and/or apprehend crime suspects, making arrests as necessary.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations, gather evidence, and take statements in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Act as a liaison officer to other police agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses connected to campus incidents.
  • Attend a number of events and make presentations to cover crime prevention. Examples of programs include, but are not limited to, new student orientations, department meetings, general information sessions, written materials and group meetings.
  • Collaborate with other University departments, i.e. Risk Management/Environmental Health and Safety to prepare crime prevention programs, to respond to certain incidents.
  • Develop relationships with those in each building to use as crime prevention liaisons. Assure that all crime prevention issues are kept foremost in communications, i.e. assure that tv monitors display a crime prevention message each month, assure that Police phone number stickers are on all phones, develop lobby posters for buildings.
  • Submit a weekly report to the Sergeant on crime prevention activities for the week. Make recommendations to the Sergeant on purchases of crime prevention material. Attend all required training as assigned and attend to all assignments under the direction of the shift sergeant.
  • The Crime Prevention Officer's primary schedule will be on a 4 & 2 schedule (8am-4pm). This schedule is subject to change depending on department needs and on the approval of the Sergeant, Lieutenant or Chief. Implement and cultivate community engagement initiatives with internal and external partners.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years of policing experience, preferable in a municipal department.
  • Must have graduated from a full-time police recruit training academy accredited by the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council or the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) Academy for campus police officers. Graduates from out-of-state academies or the Massachusetts Reserve Intermittent Training Academy with MPTC Basic Training Exemption will also be considered.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license and the ability to be insured by the College's automobile liability insurer.

Physical activities include but are not limited to:

  • Sitting and standing for extended periods of time
  • Walking and running as needed
  • Walking up and down stairs
  • Physically detaining a human being under the direction of a police officer or otherwise.
  • Lifting a human as needed
  • Pulling/ pushing a human being
  • Ability to utilize human senses, sight, sound, touch, taste, smell.

Work environment:

  • Ability to work inside and outside of building during all types of weather
  • Ability to work all hours of the day 24/7
  • Ability to work over 8 hour shifts up to including as long as needed
  • Ability to sit or stand at a location for long periods of time
  • Ability to walk for extended periods of times.
