Full Job Description
High School Sports Reporter-Casper, Wyoming
The Casper Star-Tribune, the statewide voice of Wyoming with a deep reputation for enterprising journalism, is seeking a creative and ambitious reporter to take on a new position covering high school sports.
This full-time position in our digital-first newsroom will provide opportunities for both daily reporting and deeper features. Casper is home to two of the state's largest and most competitive high schools, Natrona County and Kelly Walsh, and annually hosts state tournaments for volleyball, basketball, and other sports.
The ideal candidate will want to go beyond traditional game coverage to deliver original reporting to our readers -- from analysis of key plays to stories about star players and top-performing teams - while also embracing the opportunity to build a statewide presence. Previous sports reporting experience is required. Video experience is a bonus.
This position will be part of a three-person sports team that also covers NCAA Division I University of Wyoming, Casper College, pro and collegiate rodeo, the Casper Spuds of the Independence League Baseball Association, and the Casper Warbirds hockey club of the National Collegiate Development Conference.
The Star-Tribune is a regular winner of the Deming Cup, the Wyoming Press Association's award for general excellence, as well as other regional journalism awards. Our tradition is built upon unmatched reporting in a state that feels more like one big community with long roads.
Casper is the middle of it all, centrally located with a population of nearly 60,000 and big-city amenities, a friendly cost of living and a rejuvenated downtown featuring multiple breweries and restaurants. Outdoors enthusiasts will find a new adventure in any direction for hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding and more. Retail shopping includes Sam's Club, Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Kohl's, plus many others. Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse, Red Lobster, and Chili's are among the chain restaurants.
Additionally, Casper is regarded as the state's "meeting place," hosting many high school state tournaments and other events. And, since 1999, Casper has been home to the College National Finals Rodeo.
This is a union position with pay starting at $40,000 annually.
