Summary

The purpose of this position is to maintain high quality pharmacy services to patients and their family. This position reports to the Pharmacy Supervisor located within the Pharmacy Department.

Duties

  • Responsible for proper interpretation of prescriptions and dispensing of product prescribed, including the review of labeling needs for specifying directions for use and precautions as necessary, to assure proper protection of the contents and to the patient.
  • Provide specialized services to assist patients with managing conditions such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses.
  • Provide information and advice regarding drug therapy and usage, drug interactions, side effects, dosage and proper medication storage.
  • Maintain records, such as pharmacy files, patient records, inventories, control records for narcotics or controlled drugs.
  • Perform administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for the pharmacy program.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education
A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure
Applicants must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level
3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, Ph.D., Pharm.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) Grade Level
In addition to the requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) level, applicants must have a minimum of one year of professional pharmacy experience.

Applicant's qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position. Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties. Qualifying professional pharmacy experience may involve, but is not limited to:
  • Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects.
  • Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations.
  • Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility's pharmacy program.
  • Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens.
  • Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications.
  • Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries; and/or
  • Maintaining all medication records required by law.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR, GS-0660-12
  • Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) Certification or other equivalent accredited pharmacy board certification, or you must have completed an American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) or American Pharmacist Association (APHA) hospital or ambulatory pharmacy residency.
If you possess current certification, submit a copy with your application as a supporting document. Certification is essential to perform the duties of the position. Candidates who do not meet a selective placement factor are ineligible for further consideration.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT, GS-0660-11
If you do not possess the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification, the requirement for the full performance level of GS-12, the condition of employment is described below. If the condition of employment is not met during employment, you would be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service. The GS-11 is expected to achieve Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification in a specific amount of time depending upon your eligibility to take the examination. For example, if you have already achieved the years of experience requirement needed for taking the examination, then you would be expected to take the examination and pass the examination within 12 months of the hire date. If you are a tentatively qualified under the identified flexibility listed above, you are expected to pass the board examination once all requirements to take the examination are met.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the cut-off date(s) of the announcement (or the closing date) unless you are eligible to be tentatively qualified under the identified flexibility listed above.
