Description

We are seeking a skilled professional to join our team as a Signal Maintainer. In this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our railroad operations. Your primary responsibilities will include conducting signal system testing in accordance with FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) and UPRR (Union Pacific Railroad) requirements. You will also take the lead in installing, repairing, troubleshooting, and maintaining a wide range of railroad signals and grade crossing warning devices.

Required Certifications: For this position, you will be required to become a Union Pacific certified driver during your probationary period. To become certified, you must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:

1. Have valid driver's license

2. Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)

Medical Requirements:Must meet the medical requirements (also called physical qualifications) for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA physical qualifications for drivers can be found on the FMCSA homepage. Health and Medical Services at Union Pacific Railroad will make the final determination on whether or not an individual meets the FMCSA medical qualifications, and may add additional medical requirements to assure the person can safety perform job tasks, with or without accommodation.

Accountabilities

  • Conduct thorough inspections of signal circuitry, equipment, and systems to identify and address problems and defects.
  • Perform comprehensive testing of signal circuitry, equipment, and systems in accordance with FRA reporting requirements.
  • Utilize troubleshooting techniques to identify and resolve malfunctions in signal circuitry, equipment, and systems.
  • Assemble and disassemble signal crossing warning device equipment as needed.
  • Carry out maintenance, repair, and replacement tasks for signal communication circuitry, systems, and components.
  • Efficiently plan, organize, and track information and activities related to signal circuitry and equipment, while providing guidance to team members.
  • Take responsibility for excavation work, including digging holes and trenches required for installation purposes.
  • Adhere to company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Foster positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, contractors, and customers, and handle conflict situations effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations, particularly those mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by the supervisor to contribute to the overall efficiency of the job role.

Qualifications - Required

  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Proficient in working with both print and digital information.
  • Demonstrate the ability to comprehend, interpret, reference, evaluate, organize, and accurately record both non-technical and technical information.
  • Have computer literacy and basic keyboarding skills.
  • Display excellent communication skills.
  • Understand and adhere to safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify potential safety risks, and avoid hazardous behaviors and situations.
  • Communicate effectively in English, speaking clearly and concisely to interact with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Capable of working effectively both independently and in group settings.

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Completion of a recognized formal electrical training program, such as those offered by a community college, trade/vocational school, or military institution.

  • Possession of an Associate's degree or higher in electrical engineering or electronic technology.

  • Experience working in a variety of shifts, including overtime, holidays, and weekends.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces, demonstrating familiarity and adherence to safety protocols.

  • Willingness to work outdoors regardless of weather conditions.

  • Proficiency in operating construction equipment, including but not limited to backhoes, trenchers, cranes, and other relevant machinery.

  • Familiarity with working on and around moving heavy equipment.

  • Previous experience with railroad signaling systems.

  • Background in construction work, showcasing relevant knowledge and skills.

  • Previous exposure to work environments that necessitate the use of personal protective equipment, such as shock and arc flash clothing, safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the electrical field, which can be supported by a documented work history including references and proof of apprentice or journeyman training.

  • Possession of a certificate in electricity or electronics, or an equivalent level of education.

Physical and Mental Job Requirements

  • To be considered for employment, candidates must successfully pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT). Please note that this test is separate from the medical exam. For additional details, refer to the FAQs on UP.jobs.
  • Visual Ability: Must have normal color vision, enabling the detection and interpretation of various visual color signals and displays, as well as the ability to determine the speed of moving objects at both close and distant ranges.
  • Standing: Must be capable of standing for extended periods during the workday, with the flexibility to change positions periodically for comfort.
  • Physically Demanding Tasks: Must have the capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks, including occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 65 lbs, as well as push and pull objects up to 119 lbs.
  • Walking, Climbing, and Balance: Must be able to occasionally walk, climb, and maintain balance on ladders, poles, and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Coordinated Hand Movements: Must be able to make frequent coordinated hand movements to grasp, place, or move objects.
  • Walking to Work Site: Must be able to frequently walk to access the work site.

Work Conditions

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship.
  • Operate company vehicles and travel within assigned geographic territory.
  • Utilize various machines, tools, vehicles, and equipment in the course of work.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to practicing safe work habits at all times.
  • Comply with company policies regarding the use of personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection, as required.
  • Perform tasks at elevated heights of 20 feet or more, as needed.
