Job Description
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is in search of individuals who are "honor driven" and capable of effectively establishing relationships. Candidates should possess the necessary skills to manage critical emergency situations and demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the quality of life within our community.
Deputy Sheriffs' annual salaries, depending on education and experience, range from $50,128 to $90,022. The pre-screening process will involve an obstacle course consisting of five tasks: car push, fence climb, window breach, balance beam, and lifting 165 lbs. Additionally, candidates must complete 22 correct push-ups in one minute, 25 correct sit-ups in one minute, and run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes and 28 seconds. Deputies will attend the APOSTC academy and will receive full APOSTC Law Enforcement Certification upon completion. However, candidates are expected to demonstrate their competence in the Corrections Divisions before transitioning to patrol or other specialized divisions. Personnel have the opportunity to move into patrol positions based on seniority.

Our Locations
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, in the Birmingham Division, is located at 2200 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd., Birmingham. The Birmingham County jail is located just next door on Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd N. Sheriff’s Sub-stations are located in the strategic areas of the county, including Center Point, Forestdale, Cahaba Heights, and Mt. Olive. The Sheriff’s Office is also located in Bessemer Cut-Off Division, Bessemer. The Bessemer county jail is located next door to the Bessemer Sheriff’s Office Headquarters. There are three sub-stations located in McCalla, Oakgrove, and Sylvan Springs.
Bessemer is twelve miles west of Birmingham. Sheriff Mark Pettway maintains an office in both Divisions. The Chief Deputy is second in command of the Sheriff’s Office and oversees the daily operation and administration of the Office. The Assistant Sheriff commands the Bessemer Cut-Off Division and reports to the Sheriff.
